  • Science Fair– Congratulations to Bethany Johnson (7H) for finishing 3rd in the State Science Fair.  Tyler Jones (7M) and Sam Recchio (7M) also had a great showing in the state finals.  Congratulations to everyone who participated in the county science fair.
  • Tennis Results– Congratulations to the St. Anthony’s 2009 Division I Tennis Champions!! The tennis team had an undefeated season and beat Tenaya in the Team Championship. Congratulations to the teams: (Girls team) Sydney Perotti, Diana Kirkorian, Annabelle Beecher, Claire Christensen, Ali Teliha, Eva Julian, Mallorie Manimtim, Hayley Goebel, Evangelea DiCicco, Taylor Hamilton, Alexis DeFendis, Caroline Ball; (Boys team) Petar Repar, Hunter Douglas, Jason Lowart, Ryan Lowart, Paul Smith, Kevin Benscheidt, Jimmy Benscheidt, Brian Goebel. Sydney Perotti took 1st place in girls’ singles and Diana Kirkorian took 2nd place; Annabelle Beecher and Claire Christensen took 1st place in girls’ doubles; Petar Repar took 2nd place in boys’ singles; Jason Lowart and Ryan Leyba took 1st place in boys’ doubles; and Hunter Douglas took 3rd place in boys’ singles.   • Track News– Congratulations to the following students who competed in the Valley Championships at Buchanan High School this past weekend.  Brenna Flynn (6th place 200m), Carson Chapman (6th place High Jump) and Miles Orme (4th place High Jump). These are fantastic results considering the thousands of kids competing across the valley to reach the Valley Championship!  (5/19/09)

  • Adam Hendey and Kevin O’Rourke received the “Award for High Honors” in the International Mathematics and Verbal Talent Search conducted by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth.  Adam and Kevin were two of the four students from Fresno who received this award for being among the highest scoring participants in the state of California.  Way to go boys!   • It is always a pleasure to mention our students as they provide a community service or give back to the community in some form.  Julia and Fermin Campos will be participating in the Gamma Knife Walk for Life on Saturday, May 16th in an effort to promote a cause that has been made aware to them through Julia’s young friend.  Gamma Knife Radiosurgery is non-surgical alternative for treating brain tumors and abnormalities. We commend them on taking this opportunity to promote such a worthy cause.  (5/07/09)
  • Another student, Isabella Hume, has just donated 10 inches of her beautiful hair to “Locks for Love” in honor of our beloved Mrs. Sheree Ray.  What a wonderful tribute to someone who touched so many lives.  We are so very proud to see our students take on such commendable opportunities to serve others.   • Tennis News- SAS crushes Tenaya 9 to 1 and added another victory for our kids!  This was one of our best matches and our girls had a clean sweep. The boys had some stiff competition but kept their heads in the game to pull ahead and win! Way to go! It was a great day of tennis and we were very fortunate to have several classmates and parents cheering the kids on. (4/30/09)

  • Checkmate!- Richard Boone (6S) and Reagan Ceccarelli (3B) participated this weekend at OLPH in the Holy Chess Wars competition against other catholic schools from the valley.  Richard placed 2nd place and Reagan placed 3rd place.  Congratulations boys!! (4/07/09)

  • Yosemite Spring Fling Basketball Tournament- St. Anthony’s 5th, 6th & 7th grade girls on the “Runnin Panthers” basketball club– Madison Laval (5A), Mikaela Harris (6G) Samantha Jones (6S), Gabriella Marchese (6G), Diane O’Canto (6S), Chandler Ward (6G), Ashley Daher (7H), Mikaela Kemble (7H), and Valerie Moore (7H)– participated in the Under 12 Division of the Yosemite Spring Fling Basketball Tournament in Oakhurst April 3-5, 2009.  Congratulations to Chandler Ward (6G) who was selected “All Tourney Player”.   • Science Fair– Congratulations to all the students who entered the Central California Regional Science Fair.  There was a wide array of projects from plant science to medicine & health to physics!   • History Day Winners!- Our 8th Graders represented St. Anthony’s School at the History Day County Competition last Saturday at Fresno Pacific! Of the 7 finalists from St. Anthony’s, Michael Cimo and Carlo Mazzoni placed 4th in the website division; and Claire Baradat won the research paper division and now has the opportunity to go the State Finals in Sacramento on April 30th.  Congratulations to everyone for their outstanding project, the parents who took their time on Saturday to be a part of this and Mrs. McConnico for being their fearless leader!  (3/17/09)
  • History Day – Our 8th Graders will be representing St. Anthony’s School at the History Day County Competition this Saturday at Fresno Pacific!  Students had the choice of completing a research paper, exhibit board, website or documentary about an individual’s actions and/or legacies in history.  Congratulations to this year’s finalists: Cassie Baker – The Legacies and Actions of Queen Elizabeth I (exhibit); Claire Baradat – Harriet Tubman (paper); Chad Cardell – Martin Luther King Jr.’s Effect on Racism (website); Michael Cimo and Carlo Mazzoni – John F. Kennedy’s Impact on the U.S. (website); Petar Repar – The First Man on the Moon (exhibit); and Taylor Schmeiderer – The Battle of Iwo Jima (exhibit).  Good luck to all these history buffs! (3/10/09)
  • Academic Decathlon- Our Academic Decathlon team competed against 15 other Catholic Schools in the Diocesan Academic Decathlon held at Garces Memorial High School in Bakersfield.  We are very proud of each member of the team which includes:  Cassie Baker, Richard Boone, Evangelea DiCicco, Tim Farrow, Matt Giannetta, Adam Hendey, Emo Kirk, Kennedy Meeks, Kevin O’Rourke, and Christina Rontell.  The proud coaches are Mrs. Jami Baker, Mrs. Sue Wesh and Ms. Shearer. Thank you to Mrs. Marcia Vander Poel for her help with the artist Monet.  I’m happy to announce that our team finished 2nd overall with the following results: 1st place in the Super Quiz and 2nd place in Logic. Special thanks go to Mr. Neumeier and Mrs. Polacek for helping to coordinate this event for the Diocese. The team represented St. Anthony’s very well in the true spirit of competition.  We are especially proud of their teamwork.  Congratulations to all of you! (3/10/09)
  • Non-Public School Spelling Bee Results– Good Job! to everyone that participated in the Non-Public School Spelling Bee last weekend. The 4th grade winners were Jack Benscheidt taking 5th place and Daniela McNamara taking 3rd place; the 7th grade winner was Rosie Oshana taking 4th place; and the 8th grade winner was J.V. Villarreal taking 3rd place. Congratulations on your spelling talent!  Thank you Ms. Shearer for leading these spelling contestants to great achievements!  (3/03/09)
  • Odyssey of the Mind News- Our OM teams looked great last Saturday competing in the Regional Competition in Hanford.  We had a primary team (non-competitive) which performed and two competitive teams. The primary team consisted of: Wayne Rutledge (2K), Tyson Rutledge (1M), Chase Markarian (1P), Joey Bell (1P) and coached by Rena Rutledge. The “Earth Trek Problem” Competitive Team consisting of: Liam Cornell (3V), Matthew Chielpegian (3B), Garrison Quinn (4S), Alex Fusselman (3V) and coached by Mrs. Nikki Cornell took 2nd place! And the “Shock Waves Problem” Competitive Team consisting of:  Evenia DiCicco (3B), Karlie Adams (3V), Sarah Carlos (3V), Gigi Gonzales (3B), Meredith O’Rourke (3V) and coached by Giuliano DiCicco, Marcie Gonzales and Serena O’Rourke took 1st place!  Congratulations to the teams and their coaches and good luck as they head to the State finals. And thank you to Mrs. Deb Martin for her help in organizing this group.  (2/24/09)
  • PAL Basketball Tourney– What a weekend of basketball!  I’d like to congratulate our basketball teams and their coaches for their tremendous effort at the PAL Basketball Tournament this weekend.  They spent all day Saturday and Sunday at the San Joaquin Memorial High School Gym participating in a 26 team tournament of mostly Catholic Schools from the valley.  Not only did we enjoy some very exciting basketball but we also saw a wonderful display of school spirit, great heart, enthusiasm, class and great sportsmanship as our teams cheered for each other.  Our 8th grade boys team consisting of Matt Giannetta, Trevor Schuh, Patrick O’Rourke, Taylor Schmiederer, AJ Ferdinandi, Cameron Garver, Zak Esqueda, Noah Simonian, Paul Smith, John Justin, Andrew Antognoli, Joe Harris and Alex Cameron coached by Russell Raypon and Mike Linden, placed 2nd. Our 8th grade girls team consisting of Danielle Beshwate, Maggie Peracchi, Sydney Perotti, Ava Gambero, Kylie Woodward, Franchesca Ingley, Diana Kirkorian, Christina Rontell, Alexa Gambero, Claire Christensen and Brigid Powers coached by Vince Gambero and Dan Houtsinger, won the championship in a great come-from-behind victory over St. La Salle. Our 7th grade girls finished in 5th place coached by Dan Houtsinger and Bob Coyle; 7th the grade boys, coached by Brett Lowart, David Martinez and Brad Roznovsky, won the Consolation Championship while competing against mostly older teams. And selected to the All Tournament Team were Ashley Daher (7th), Brennen Martinez (7th), Brigid Powers (8th), Claire Christensen (8th), Christina Rontell (8th), Patrick O’Rourke (8th), AJ Ferdinandi (8th), Paul Smith (8th) and the tournament MVP was Danielle Beshwate (8th).   Congratulations to all the players!   • Soccer News- Coach Randy Prescott’s Bullard U-11 Boys soccer team, the Fighting Chiweenies, made it to the Championship of the State Cup before losing 1-0 last weekend in Morgan Hill. Players on the team from St. Anthony’s include Brady Prescott, Nick Sheehan, Braden Fitzgerald, Matthew Carlos, Miles Orme and Michael Ball. Way to go boys! (2/17/09)
  • Swim News- Justin De Sousa (2K) and Katherine Mendyk (2K), members of the Fig Garden Swim Team, participated in the Tule Nation Swim Meet in Tulare on February 7-8.  Justin placed 1stin the 100 yard Individual Medley, C Division;  Katherine placed 2nd in the 50 yard backstroke, B Division, and qualified for the Junior Olympics in Bakersfield on February 19th -22nd.   • Little SAINTS– Those Little SAINTS were at it again as they spent all day Saturday creating over 700 of their famous “Candygrams”.  The Candygrams will be distributed this Friday, February 13th.  Over $700 was raised to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Thank you very much for your support and to the Little SAINTS for a wonderful service project.   • All-Star Soccer Tournament– Congratulations to the 3rd grade boys for competing in the All-Star Tournament a couple of weekends ago.  The boys were outstanding and had a fabulous time on the field.  Congratulations to: John-John Ewell, Sebastian Esqueda, Parker Nassar, Andrew O’Rourke, Chase Perkins, Dean Raymond and Adam Salinas.  Way to go SAS boys!  (2/10/09)

  • Inauguration attendees – Claire Baradat (8B) was one of the many attendees at the Inauguration last week. She attended with the group JrPYIC (=Junior Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference).  What a great experience for you, Claire! Hope you dressed warm!!
  • Run – Raiders – Run! -Congratulation to our elementary x-country team.  The City Championships were this past week at Woodward Park, with over 50 schools participating.  And we had an outstanding showing. Our 6th Grade Boys placed 3rd, 4th Grade Boys placed 2nd, and our 5th grade Boys Team won the City Championship!  Members of the 5th grade championship team: Michael Ball, Matthew Carlos, Scott Farrow, Devin Fiorentino, Miles Orme, Franko Roque, and Nick Sheenan.  The Sweepstakes were awarded, which goes to the top overall schools at the event.  St. Anthony’s placed 2nd out of 50 plus teams. Congratulations to all the runners and their hard work! (12/16/08)
  • Student Recognition Program – Henry T. Perea, councilmember for the City of Fresno, honors students attending schools in District 7 for outstanding academic achievement and community awareness through the Student Recognition Program.  This year’s honorees are Cassie Baker (8S) and Christina Rontell (8S).  They will be presented with certificates during the City Council meeting on Tuesday, December 9th at 8:30 am. We are so proud of their commitment to school and the community!   (12/02/08)
  • See Alex Fly! – The Children’s Musical Theaterworks is presenting the play “Peter Pan” on December 5th – 7th and 10th – 13th with a many different performances.  Our very own Alex Figueroa (5A) will be flying on stage as he portrays “Michael” in this play.  Please pick up a flyer in the office for the performance times.  As they say in show biz, break a leg Alex!   • Congratulations Swimmers! – The Fig Garden Swim Team members Justin De Sousa, Nicholas Henricy and Katherine Mendyk (all 2K) and Emilio Marquez (2G) participated in the Yosemite Swim Meet in Oakhurst on November 8th and 9th with the following results:  Nicholas placed 2nd, 25 backstroke; Katherine placed 1st in the 100 Ind. Medley; Justin placed 1st for the 25 breaststroke; and Emilio placed 3rd in the 50 freestyle.  On November 1st Justin   placed 1st in the 25 free, back and breast and Katherine placed 1st in the 25 back, 3rd in 25 free and 4th in 25 fly at the Olympic League meet at Clovis East.  Nice job swimmers!   If you would like to swim, Winter Session (heated pool) starts Monday, December 1st.  For information, please contact Coach Caroline Lindholm-Reynaud at 230-0312.   • Little SAINTS – This wonderful “little” group of students will be making P B & J sandwiches to donate to the Poverello House for their November service project on Saturday, November 22nd from 9:00-10:30 in Room 9.  Service organizations such as this are just another thing to be thankful for during this time of Thanksgiving!   • Congratulations – We would like to congratulate our football teams that participated in the PAL Tournament this past Saturday:  8th grade took 3rd place, 6th grade took 1st place and 5th grade were the Consolation Champions!  It was a great showing by all the teams and especially exciting to watch the boys in a downpour of rain!  Congratulations to all the teams on a fantastic season!   • Fatima Mass – There was a beautiful celebration at the 5:15 Mass last Saturday, October 13th of the 90th anniversary of the Fatima children’s visions of the Blessed Mother.  Mrs. Dina Shwiyhat would like to thank the children who portrayed the shepherd children in the Mass: Alejandro Leon (3B) who portrayed Francisco and Alice Orme (K1) who portrayed Jacinta.  You did a great job and don’t forget that this opportunity is available again in May.  (10/28/08)
  • Congratulations! – We have a community of great athletes! The PAL JV Volleyball Tournament at Fresno Christian this past weekend and our 6th grade girls took 3rd place and the Varsity Girls Team took 2nd place!  We also had two players earn All Tournament honors as well:  Ava Gambero and Katie Ryan. Way to go girls…..we’re proud of all of you!
    Another honorable mention is Alex Fusselman who placed 2nd in his age group and 7th overall in the
    Boy’s Division of the Merced Gateway Triathlon on October 5th. He recorded a time of 0:30:01 over a route consisting of 200M long course swim, two-mile bike ride and a one-mile run.  WOW! Sounds tiring! (10/28/08)
  • Congratulations – Hats off to Braeden Bailey (3B) who was nominated to the National Young Scholar Program and last June he traveled to Occidental College in Los Angeles.  For six days, Braeden studied with other 2nd and 3rd graders, the effects of environmental toxins on an imaginary city as part of his chosen course of study, “Going Green: Quest to Save the Environment”.  He had a great time completing his course and was invited to come back again in the summer of 2009.   • More Congratulations! – The following St. Anthony’s students, members of the Fig Garden Swim Team, participated in the Olympic Swimming Meet at Central High School on October 18th and placed as follows:  Ethan Fusselman (2K) 7th, 50 freestyle; Justin de Sousa (2K) 2nd, 25 backstroke; Katherine Mendyk (2K) 1st, 25 backstroke; Alex Fusselman (3V) 6th, 100 freestyle.   • 1st Annual Catholic Cup Soccer Tournament – St. Anthony’s girls and boys teams both played very well in this tournament last weekend.  The teams competing were: Girls – SA Lightning, SA Sting Rays, SA Tigers; and Boys – SA Sharks, SA Clash, and SA Gunners. The SA Gunners and SA Lightning both finished second, losing in the championship game. The SA Lightning, coached by Bruce Campbell, and the SA Clash, coached by Marco Figueroa and Jaime Gonzales, both won Sportsmanship Awards this weekend.  Both the players and parents were great all weekend, even when they lost they were positive.  We would like to thank everyone for their participation and support, and look forward to next year.   • Caty Otero, (4S) was cast as an understudy for the roles of a Fezziwig Daughter, Miranda, and the Miserable Girl at GCP 2nd Space Theatre in “A Christmas Carol”. The show runs Nov. 1 – Dec. 23. Her dad is playing the Ghost of Christmas Present. If you go see the show, be sure to mention her name when you reserve your tickets.  (10/13/08)
  • Congratulations – We pride ourselves in the accomplishments of our students and we would like to recognize Maurice Frediere (6S) for his completion of the Cryptography: Math and Codes online course taken through the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. Great job Maurice! (10/07/08)
  • ARF! – In honor of the Feast of St. Francis, our students Regan DeBenedetto, Ally Martin and Anne Sampson (all in 3B) drew pictures to sell and the proceeds went to the Animal Rescue of Fresno (ARF). Community Service is at work at SAS! (10/07/08)
