Welcome! This 2011-2012 school year is my sixth year in the classroom at St. Anthony’s School teaching Junior High Social Studies and 7th grade Math.

The title of our textbooks is History Alive, and that is my goal in the classroom: bring learning alive for students to experience and discover our past, rather than passively reading and listening about the past. I always remind my students history is constantly changing as we find new evidence, and our past is open to discussion.

7th Grade Social Studies covers medieval times in Europe, Africa, China, Japan, and Central and South America. The main project for the year is the Medieval Feast (Friday November 4) where students take on the role of a resident or entertainer in a medieval castle, and decorate, serve lunch, and perform for the faculty and staff of St. Anthony’s School.

8th Grade Social Studies is all in the United States, starting with the Native Americans and early European explorers, and studying through Industrial America after the Civil War. 8th grade students are challenged to research and complete a historical project for California’s History Day. Students have the option of creating a dramatic performance, interactive website, documentary, historical research paper, or a museum type exhibit. We also take a group of students to New York City and Washington, D.C. to see our nation’s roots.

Another important aspect of Social Studies is our current event discussions where we are able to make connections of our history to our present day. It is so important in our global community to understand what is going on in the world around you, and to understand that your actions to greatly affect the great world we live in.

7th Grade Pre-Algebra follows the state standards using a variety of methods between individual and group work, textbook and laptop practice, repetition and hands-on creations. Students participate in Mathletics where they have an interactive opportunity to show they have mastered the standards, and they can compete with other students around the world in timed math facts competitions.

I am a teacher, a mentor, and more recently, a mother! I am a product of St. Anthony’s School and am so privileged to work in such a supportive community of both families and staff. We all work together to teach our children to be responsible citizens active in a global community where we can freely practice and share our faith. Students come to school each day with a happy attitude ready to take on any challenge we have in store. Go Raiders!!
